Not only one of the best shows of 2023, but one of the best shows I have seen, period. There is no doubt that A24 is one of the most ambitious studios out there – pushing the envelope for diverse and unique stories. Add this one towards their top 10 list.
With Steven Yeun and Ali Wong in the lead roles, they really allow this story unfold. I have been a big fan of Yeun’s ever since The Walking Dead. His character appears unrecognizable compared to any of the other characters that he has played before due to toxicity he has to play. Ali Wong is another standout here. The performance that is called for her allows her to play well with Yeun. I did notice that Jake Schreier directed a couple of episodes – the same guy who is directed MCU’s Thunderbolts, which makes me believe that Yeun has good reason to join that movie.
The story is very strong here. If you have read the plot synopsis, the inciting incident starts fairly quickly. Once that happens, it’s fair to question what they can do from here, and man, do they have things in store for the rest of this series. One thing that sticks out is how the shows uses somewhat older songs from the 2000’s and use references to that time. This ends up becoming a powerful tool to explain why the characters do what they do. They are essentially a by product of the time that they grew up in. While they end up doing bad, toxic things, they are also trying their best based on what they know.
Every other aspect from the sound to the cinematography and to the editing are all on point. Even though each episode is a little over 30 minutes, every moment is so vital to the overall plot. The cinematography captures the tone of the show and allows for an easy watching experience through its editing process.
Overall, it is extremely difficult for me to find anything at fault here. The show start off with a lot of intensity and continue to crank the dial up that will keep viewers on the edge of their seat, while also feeling symphony towards its well-developed characters.
I can’t wait to see this again in the future.
VERDICT: 5/5 (Perfect)
