To my surprise, I am really happy that this is finding such a welcoming and well-deserved place amongst viewers. It meets the hype.
I didn’t know much about this up until its release. After seeing it in Letterboxd’s Top 10 for at least a week, I decided that it was time to see what it was all about. Romance stories are not always my cup of tea. I don’t mind watching them, but they are not always something that I go seeking out. David Jonsson is someone I have previously seen in HBO’s Industry, and I really enjoy that show. Between what I have seen from that show and the attention the film was getting, I decided to just go for it, and I have no regrets.
At 82 minutes, the film gets straight to the point and truly takes advantages of every moment is has to offer. The best way to explain this movie as a whole is that it feels like a deconstructed meal that has a lot to offer based on how small it is. It truly feels bigger. The film starts off in a really unique way by taking the viewer in a unisex bathroom. On one hand, it offers the perspective that this film is for everyone, while on the other hand, it shows that this is going to be different from what you have seen before. It is clear that the film has a very unique take on its cinematography. From there, it leads into an art exhibit that conveys that the film will be artistic, but will help the viewer understand that they are in good hands.
Perhaps the film’s strongest element is its acting. The leads are extremely likable, and while the talent is very good, it wouldn’t be as effective if it wasn’t for its writing and direction. This could have easily been a non-effective, throw away movie that wouldn’t have fair well with viewers. Due to how realistic it is, it is so easy to stay invested and feel happy for its runtime.
My only real complaint is that the film can lean into certain scenes that take longer to get to its point than it should. I found myself spacing out at times, but I really didn’t mind it either as I found myself already invested in seeing how the film would play out.
Overall, I really recommend checking this one out. It’s beautifully constructed and layered with real emotions. As previously mentioned, I am really happy that a small indie like this is finding a welcome place amongst viewers. More of these, please.
VERDICT: 4/5 (Really Good)
