The fact that I realized at the end of the movie that I could finally actually breathe shows just how effective this entry was, even with its flaws.
Like many others, I’d consider myself a big Evil Dead fan. I initially saw 2013’s Evil Dead around the time it came out, and wasn’t a fan. Even though I recently rewatched it and I still think it’s a little bit better, I still didn’t think we had anything on par with the original trilogy, which is what I saw back in October of last year and became a fan from. The trilogy feels like the right mix of different genres between the first being horror, the second being comedy, and the third being action, all while still maintaining the same tone. I bring this up as I don’t feel like they have nailed down the magic of that trilogy, but this entry will do in the meantime.
Right off the bat, this was a very exciting time at the movies, and I don’t always say that. I am not of the belief that you need to see movies in theaters in order for it to be good. While I love going to the theater as much as possible to support and I hope others can too to the best of the ability, but this is one that I don’t think I would have felt if they initially released it on HBO Max like they originally planned. Being in a crowd who would scream from being scared or would laugh in the more ridiculous moments, making the experience well worth it.
I really enjoyed the aspect of them going to a new location to shake it up. My only complaint is that I wish it was so grungy looking to begin with. I think it would have been really cool if they chose a really pristine destination, and by the end of the movie, the place would have been unrecognizable. We’re already getting a horror movie and with a new location, that would have been really exciting. The acting was very good all across the board, and a huge step up from the previous entry. The plot also manages to be really effective and unpredictable. When I thought things were going in one direction, my expectations were completely subverted.
Besides the location, my only other issues are within some plot points. The way the entire thing gets into motion is very random. It feels like it comes off intentional to serve one of the characters. I am also tired of young kids doing stupid things just to be reckless and get the plot going. It’s difficult to avoid spoilers, however, these are also not plot points that will ruin the watching experience. If you have the ability to, please go see this.
Overall, this is a great time. I think it will satisfy the fans, while maybe bringing in new ones who are not as familiar with the property. I really liked this new direction, and I hope that if they continue making more, that they will continue to expand to other locations.
VERDICT: 4/5 (Really Good)
