“Champions” Review

The film does exactly what you expect it to do. It is extremely formulaic and overlong, but it has a lot of heart to make someone go “Hey, I like that guy.”

For the record, I did not say that. I can just see people saying that, which isn’t a bad thing, but… it can be overdone at times.

To be completely transparent, I, along probably many others, was not thrilled to see this. The trailer was one of those trailers that would make you sigh every time it came on; however, where the movie sold me is within the story and representation. I have a special connection with the film’s characters, particularly those who have Down syndrome. It was nice to see these characters shine and have a bigger spotlight than Woody Harrelson’s character.

Where the movie really goes downhill is how dated this script is. It feels like Bobby Farrelly chose a script from the 2000’s and didn’t take into consideration just how bad the main character was written. It has become an often trope for someone as bad as he is to become good by the end. I get that is the point of the movie, but I think that it was the biggest fallback, which resulted in the supporting characters acting in ways that didn’t feel believable. The movie is also way too long, clocking in at about 2 hours that could have been cut by at least 30 minutes.

Overall, it does the job of making you feel good. The humor was pretty good, too. Even with its flaws, I wouldn’t mind giving it a recommendation. It wouldn’t hurt, but I also would never watch this again. I think my rating would lower after seeing it again.

VERDICT: 3.5/5 (Pretty Good)
