This was really not bad and surprised me a lot more than what I was expecting. It feels like a better attempt at making a low-budget film feel bigger and tackling certain issues, while also having to get over its other drawbacks.
I was originally not going to see this. With it dropping on Hulu fairly quickly and with a concept that seemed to have been done one too many times, I avoided it… until I found out that Melora Hardin who plays as Jan from The Office was in it. When I found out that someone from that show will be in something, I try to support it as much as possible. Also, it’s quite hilarious that she literally plays the antithesis of Jan when she get a sperm donor.
Like I said, I didn’t have high hopes to begin with and the way the movie starts out, it is really no different than what I was expecting. The cinematography was nice, but the movie jumped around a lot and it was clear that the script suffered, resulting in under-developed characters and outdated dialogue. When the main character starts to lose it, the acting from others can be pretty bad as they try to match the intensity.
The film’s message is something that hasn’t been done before. Where it makes it better, in my opinion, is showing the horror of what this individual has to go through. It eventually leads to an ending that can only have been done based on what comes before, even if it does fall apart and doesn’t really stick the landing as much as I think it would like to.
Overall, I really do recommend watching this. Even though I am giving this a little bit more of a lower score, I think there is a lot of merit in this. The movie has its good moments, particularly within the tension. It also has its bad moments, including the ending that fell apart very quickly.
But hey, I also gave The Empty Man a 3/5 and that’s already beginning to have a cult following, and I believe the film has some really outstanding moments just as this one does. Watch it if you can though. I think there will be some good conversations about this post-watch.
VERDICT: 3/5 (Good)
