It’s a film that shouldn’t work, but thanks to its timely script, important themes, and charismatic characters, this is an enjoyable watch.
Starting off with the premise – this will either be for you or not. Knowing that this was based on a real Craigslist ad, I can see the creativity behind it. It doesn’t support the idea, but showing to what lengths people will go when desperate. Aside from the humor, there is a real human side to this. The emotions that the lead characters share felt reminiscent of past feelings that have been too familiar. This is truly why I love movies. As much as they are an escape, there is always something real that I can understand.
Surprisingly, Jennifer Lawrence is really good in this type of role that requires to go to certain lengths to deliver what the script requires. Not only does she have to deliver the laughs, but also the drama behind why her character is the way she is. You can truly see an arc here for her character. This can be applied to Andrew Barth Feldman’s character, who Jennifer Lawrence’s character is trying to seduce. I really enjoyed their journey’s, both together and personally, and it’s something that carries the film from start to finish.
Aside from the positives, the negatives that come to mind is within some of its humor and with the writing. The humor won’t be for everyone. It’s definitely a silly type of humor that may not feel real to everyone. For me, I enjoy this type of humor as it is a nice way to disconnect from reality at times and to not take everything seriously. The writing also could have been greatly improved in certain aspects. It still doesn’t make much sense to me for Lawrence’s character to go through all of these hoops just to get a car in order to make money. To me, I don’t see why she wouldn’t have just accepted cash instead, but I think this plot choice might have been due to her character wanting to make her money through doing something good. Some of the side characters weren’t written great either, from the best friends of Lawrence’s character and the parents. They more so served a purpose to drive the plot forward than actually be interesting characters.
Overall, this is the type of R-rated comedy that we don’t get that much anymore. It has a sense of humor that you either get or you don’t, but if it’s something that you think you might enjoy, I believe you will find your time warranted with this film. Hope more of these R-rated comedies start to make a comeback!
VERDICT: 3.5/5 (Pretty Good)
