Bottoms is a total surprise from start to finish. Rachel Sennott & Ayo Edebiri catapult themselves to super stardom with this film, which only elevates everyone else in their supporting roles. Director Emma Seligman & Sennott showed the world their talent with 2020’s Shiva Baby. Here, they showed that they are here to stay.
At twenty-eight years old, it is quite impressive to see what Seligman has accomplished. It is rare to see someone show their capabilities as a director, as well as show promise of what their future holds. As for co-lead actress & co-writer with Seligman, Sennott shows no slowing down in what she is also capable with. As for Edebiri, she is a star in this. I’d like to believe that The Bear put her on the map, but this solidified as her as one of the best actresses working right now. As for the remaining supporting cast, I have seen them in other things, but with this, they get the opportunity to play against type and do it extremely well.
Perhaps my favorite attribute of the film is how satirical it can get. The film borders the line of self parody & realism. From what I gathered from this perspective is seeing how the characters treat high school from this perspective. This is their world to them, but it doesn’t mean that it is completely real. It leads the audience to better understand and care for the characters as they see them as flawed humans to root for.
On a technical level, it is all truly masterful. The cinematography & editing perfectly go hand-in-hand to create seamless cuts that allow the eye to see everything that needs to be seen. The production & sound design also work perfectly with one another as it has to bring the shock value of the material to life. With such a young perspective in front & behind the camera, it is safe to say that movies like this will continue to get people going to the theater. To further expand off of that, it seems like people are becoming far more interested in going to the theater if it is treated like an event. As long as films like this treat themselves as something that you can’t miss in theaters, then I only hope these movies continue to succeed in the future.
As for any flaws, I’d need to see it again to see if it is worth the 5/5. There was a guy sitting next to me in the theater who was really disruptive to the point where I was not looking forward to some of the jokes, because I knew he’d be loud about it. Initially, I was going to give this a 4/5, because there was a moment a bit towards the end that felt a bit cliché at first, but it did grow on me. I believe Bottoms ends up having the rewatchable quality where it will continue to grow on its audience, leading it to only be further admired in the long run.
Overall, the hype for this film is as real as it gets. It’s hilarious, violent, and totally unpredictable. All of the talent in front of the camera have bright futures ahead of them. I am genuinely looking forward to see anything that this cast & crew do next. Bottoms is one of the funniest movies of the year, if not, at least in quite a while.
VERDICT: 4.5/5 (Amazing)
