The season 3 finale of Prime Videos’ Invincible recently aired, meaning you can now watch the entire full season on the streaming service. The show includes a juggernaut of an ensemble that includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, Gillian Jacobs, Walton Goggins, and many, many more. This season follows Mark, otherwise known as Invincible (voiced by Yeun) as he continues to struggle finding the balance of his morals as a superhero.
Like the previous season, I binged the entire season when it all came out. I did watch it on a weekly basis, but waiting a week for each episode just doesn’t quite hit as hard. So much occurs in this season that I needed a refresher to get a better picture of my thoughts. Where the second season packs a lot in the season, it is rather slow where this season picks up the pacing while still packing a lot into each episode. The second season felt like build up for what would be a powerhouse, third season. This not only improves on the second season’s flaws, but will remind viewers why they are fans in the first place.

Without adding any bias, I do truly believe this show was made just for me. I am sure fans feel the same way. I feel this way due to the writing, voice acting, and music. This is, undoubtedly, one of the most darkest shows out there right now. I loved animation as a kid, but was forced to grow out of it. I have found a new appreciation for the medium that feels more fitting for what I enjoy. The writing continues to hit hard with its themes and never shies away from being as dark & gritty as possible. This season has a somewhat similar approach to the previous season and manages to up the stakes like never before.
It’s incredibly rare to see the performances come to life through the voice acting. What’s quite impressive is that if this ever became a live-action movie, I’d totally buy it that each actor could fit into each role, even with some age discrepancies. The emotion that comes out of each actor is unreal, especially from Steven Yeun. The guy continues to put in so much effort into the role. There are a few other surprise voices that I caught notice of that will surely make viewers excited. Walton Goggins continues to voice a character in this show that I found very interesting. Goggins just doesn’t miss.

The music this season continues the trend the first season started with grungy alternative rock. It’s not as impactful as the first season, but it’s extremely close. The opening song is now something I consistently listen to on Spotify. The concluding song comes from one of my all-time favorite bands. It was like creator Robert Kirkman understand the type of music the fans of the show would like and just leaned into it.
Speaking of leaning into it, this season makes up for the previous season’s misgivings. I actually think the second season works best when you binge it. To be fair, that’s how I feel with this season. No matter what, Kirkman continues to give what the fans want time and time again. The show offers a lot of action and a lot of character development. The last episode, however, is quite possibly one of the greatest episodes of television I have ever seen. It never stops. Believe the hype with this episode.

I know other viewers have taken issue with the animation. I personally don’t mind it as I view it more as a stylistic choice over being a budgetary one. I remember it throwing me off at times in the first season, but I quickly got used to it. If that is something that you may take issue with, I’d say to go into this being warned. Regardless, what they do with the animation is quite amazing overall, particularly in the final two episodes.
When I initially first watched the season, I didn’t like the lack of J.K. Simmons and I still felt like the plot could get overwhelming at times. On second watch, I don’t mind the lack of Simmons. It feels like they are working towards something with his character. There is a plan that I can’t wait to see fully realized. I still felt like the plot could be overwhelming at times, which can get overwhelming. There is a large cast of characters that I thoroughly enjoy, but it can be hard to follow at times.

Overall, the third season of Invincible proves why it’s one of the best shows out there right now. The animation is still unique, the characters are more interesting than ever before, and the action will deeply satisfy its fans. If you were worried after the second season, you can lay those worries to rest. I believe we are in good hands going forward.
VERDICT: 4.5/5 (Amazing)
