The Paper is a new series on Peacock with all 10 episodes available now that serves as a follow-up and spinoff to The Office. Created by Greg Daniels & Michael Koman, the show stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and Oscar Nunez. Documentary crew searches for new subject, finding a dying Midwestern newspaper and its publisher’s efforts to revive it using volunteer reporters.
Even though I am a huge fan of The Office, I still looked forward to watching the new spin-off. Based on what I was seeing on the internet, it seems like the majority of people were completely against this. I suppose I can understand why as it didn’t totally feel necessary. Surprisingly, it actually works really well, and I’m intrigued by what happens next.

While The Office is one of my all-time favorite shows, this first season is better than the first season of The Office. Where the first season of The Office was still trying to figure things out, this season feels more realized with a clear direction on where it needs to go. Sure, there are some repetitive plotlines that can become predictable, but it’s abundantly clear that Greg Daniels returns with the best of intentions to make this something worthwhile.
Oscar Nunez is the only returning character from the original show. I didn’t think there would be much more of a connective tissue between this and the main show. The way the show lives in the same world is unique and realistic, but I can also see it being divisive amongst fans. I’m not entirely sold on the idea as I still need more context on what happened to the original characters from The Office. At the moment, there’s more than enough of a connection to make this worth seeing, while also making this its own thing. I think most people will see many comparisons between The Office and Parks and Recreation. If you have seen those shows, you can see where certain plotlines are going a mile away that may have been better if the show found a clever way to subvert expectations and deliver something even more different than its comparisons.

I also believe viewers will see comparisons between the characters here and the characters of The Office; although, I’d argue the show here manages to assemble a great & memorable cast. While the characters may be different, the sense of direction and how important the characters are does feel different. It’s almost as if Jim was the main character of the main show. So far, I’m enjoying that.
One aspect going into the show was feeling like Oscar was only there to draw fans in for a few episode arc before he leaves. That’s not the case here. He’s actually a series regular! He manages to serve an incredible purpose to the show that helps bridge the gap between The Office and The Paper. There’s been enough time since the flagship show where I don’t feel like I am missing the original characters we love. I even think there’s potential for them to come back in future seasons.

Through the success of the superfan episodes of The Office on Peacock, I’d like to think that’s the reason why each episode here is 30 minutes long. With only 10 episodes, every moment & every detail feel vital to keep the story going. The show even has a brand new intro with the same tone as its flagship that I can see becoming just as iconic.

Overall, The Paper is a great spin-off that I believe will gain fans over time just like The Office. The characters are already familiar, it embraces the same tone as other great comedies, and the humor works very well. There are some creative decisions that may divide viewers. I only hope the choices will prove to be more effective over time.
VERDICT: 4/5 (Great)
